A local school district has asked me and our string tech to present a clinic for their music teachers at their in-service day. I probably have about an hour to hour and a half that I need to kill with woodwinds and brass. They want us to cover basic repair and preventive maintenance. I'm guessing that several of them will have questions and specific things they want to address, but has anyone else done this and do you have suggestions as far as what came up/what worked/what was a disaster? I'll probably spend a bit of time on various brands/makes of instruments as well - ie, if you've been around for awhile, the biz ain't what it was when you started...

My lead tech and I did a similar thing a few weeks ago only we spoke to college students who were music majors. We mostly stuck with very, very basic things that can get you by in a pinch and often said "be sure to take it to the repair shop when you get the chance." It really depends upon how much knowledge these teachers have. We didn't have nearly that much time either. Mostly we talked about obvious things like broken valve guides or guides in wrong, valves in backward, waterkey corks, reattaching woodwind springs, pulling stuck slides (gently), bridge adjustments, A/Ab adjustments on clarinets, neck 8va key adjustment on sax - like I said basics but these were college students. Some band directors will have some knowledge already so that all may not help you much. Good luck.
