Does anyone know the fastest and easiest way to clean a flute that was in a fire? black on the inside and intermitant black on the outside.

Thanks

That's a tough one.  Don't know how charred it is but I know when I go camping and put a metal bowl over a fire, it takes steel wool to get the black soot off.  My guess is a good buffing and/or hand ragging on the outside and a good polishing of the bore.

For the bore, wrap some cloth around a dowel rod, put some tripoli on it, put it in the flute, and then chuck the rod in a lathe.  Hold the flute tightly!

If you don't have a lathe and are more daring, put some tripoli on a cloth, wrap it on a tuning rod, chuck the tuning rod in the bench motor and run the cloth in the flute.

Did all the solder joints survive the fire?

Michelle

Note: Sharon is a repair tech.  I do not recommend the bore polishing for non-techs!  It can be dangerous.
