I got in a clarinet with absolutely no name or any sort of identification. It gets very stuffy at low G and won't play anything below that. I have checked for leaks and everything else I can think of. Anybody have any ideas ?

Hi Dave,

When you say that you checked for leaks, what method did you use? I had a clarinet in recently that leaked like a sieve everywhere but in the padding. There were leaks at the posts and around the tone hole inserts. To find them I took the keys off, plugged up all the tone holes and one end with the neoprene plugs from JL Smith and Kraus, put it in water and lightly blew into the open end. Bubbles came out of that horn everywhere!

Maybe you've already done this though. Let us know.

Thanks for your quick reply michele. I checked the pads with a leak light but did not think to check out the other hardware. Thanks I will give that a try.

Are the tenon corks tight?....just another thought

did what michele suggested and it took just a couple of minutes to find out that one of the tone hole inserts was loose. The funny part is that I then tried to play the instrument with the cork still in the bottom. As soon as I took the cork out and reattacned the inser) the instrument played just fine
