While sifting through
piles of boxes that we had sitting around the shop, we discovered a
wooden flute. It's very old and bears the trademark of George Cloos.
The problem is that the head joint is ivory and has a massive crack
running the length of the joint. Any ideas on how to fill this crack
without it looking horrible? I'm not worried about a perfect seal, as
the bore is lined with metal tubing, however I'd like it to look good
enough to display. Thanks.

Super Glue makes an ivory colored epoxy called Plastic Fusion. I've
used it to repair broken bassoon bell rings. It sets up pretty quickly,
and should match fairly well, if the ivory isn't TOO yellowed. A word
of caution, the stuff smells really, really awful for about a day. The
smell totally disappears, but mix and use it outdoors.

I believe I have heard someone who restored old ivory flutes talk about
getting old piano keys, griding them up and mixing with epoxy. Kind of
like the super glue/grenedilla thing. You might contact the Sweetheart
Flute Company (Google them) since they make reproductions and I think
also sell antique instruments. At any rate, they're nice people and can
probably steer you in the right direction.
