I'm working with a couple of older horns- satin silver finish that are now very tarnished. Waht is the best means of cleaning them up? Polish? The Tarn-X type of tarnish removal? I assume buffing is not great with the rougher surface, but would rather hear from the voice of experience than end up being one.

Hey JT,
A few things I've used:
1. Ragging the horn with a Tide laundry detergent and baking soda paste. 2. Ragging the horn with a moistened pre-treated ragging cloth. If you aren't a technician, you can also get the cloth from JL Smith. 3. Goddard Silver Foam to remove the tarnish. Finish by ragging with silver cloth to restore the color.
Good luck, Michelle

I'll second what Michelle said. The Tide/baking soda paste works well after an initial cleaning with silver foam or dipping or swabbing with tarnish remover (stinks!).
I use about 50/50 tide and baking soda with water to make a paste. Ragging would work well, but I also use a stiff brush, like a plating brush, to apply and you can use a long handled bristle brush you would use for the inside of tubing to get into areas around casings, etc. since this is easier to do in the sink than ragging.
