I have a schools bassoon bocal with a 1 inch split on the side. What is the best way to repair the crack? I can only think of soldering a small patch over the split?

Thanks.

Ron,

Bocals are really difficult to do much with, especially on a
school budget. Yes, I'd just patch it the best I could. Even Chip
Owen and other bassoon experts agree that a bocal is just
about impossible to put back totally right. I have also tried just
silver soldering them closed, but it's hard to get them cleaned
out enough first. If silver soldering the tip of the bocal, it can
actually melt, so use caution. Good luck.

..... also if you try & silver solder it closed you risk unsoldering the original join, which is where they tend to split anyway.

We usually patch them with thin brass. It doesn't look good, but most schools just need for it to work, they don't care how it looks. Bocals are so expensive to replace.
