I
had no idea where to post this. I have a client whose son is a third
year music major in college. His instrument is trumpet. Recently he has
developed respiration problems for which the doctors seem unable to
find a cause. He has had to give up marching band and may have to
scuttle his music career altogether unless a cause is found. I
suggested mold either in his instrument or his environment. Anybody
have any ideas?

If you think the instrument is moldy why not clean it and replace the
case and see. Seems it would be worth it if that is the answer.
Can't they check for mold allergies or other allergies?
Sometimes breathing problems can be stress related.
Maybe a new doctor?

We had a student recently who was having an allergic reaction on the skin of her hands to the metal on the keys of her clarinet. We tried switching her to a silver-plated key clarinet, and it did not help. Finally we tried lacquering an entire clarinet with the pads pegged shut, and it has worked perfectly.
Makes me wonder if you could somehow clean and then lacquer the inside of the instrument if it would help?

I suggest that this kid go to a first class pulmonologist. Breathing problems, if left unchecked, can haunt you for life. Then find out what in the environment is causing this. Could be darn near anything, these days.
