Hello All!
I've been thinking about ways to improve the air quality
in my shop. We have a seperate room for buffing, but no means of
removing the dust from the environment. I was thinking about getting a
cyclone dust collector with a couple of filter bags that can filter as
small as 1/2 a micron. Would this be the best choice or does anyone
have any other suggestions?

Since no experts have jumped in here, I'll venture a commment based on
setups I have seen. I'm not sure of the micron size, but the dust from
Burns red rouge on a flannel wheel seems to be smaller than anything.
One
consideration for dust collection is the noise of the equipment. If
you're in an overhaul shop and doing a lot of buffing, having the dust
collection in another room cuts down the noise level and stress. You
want a lot of air moving through the hoods--enough to take a clarinet
key if you drop it. Run the duct for the collector along the floor and
up the wall to the collection unit with a clean out port at the floor
level to retrieve small parts.
One shop had the collector and
filter bag inside a small room that had walls of 1/8" pegboard on both
sides and unfaced fiberglass insulation between the walls to filter out
small particles that the bags didn't get. I imagine you could find some
good filters that could be easily changed in place of the unfaced
fiberglass. Caulking and weatherstripping are a must to keep the dust
contained.

Ken,
I too am investing in a new dust collection system and am going with a Grizzly Cyclone. I haven't decided on which model yet. I have gotten some very positive reviews on these cyclones, and they are quite affordable. Let me know if you have purchased a system yet to bring me current on what you've done. Thanks
Greg

The Grizzly cyclones are used here in out luthier shop. There are two of them although the space is quite large. They are excellent. They are both used for the fine finish sanding and also the floor sweepings.
Hope that helps.
