I am making my first attempt to completely stip an old instrument and re-lacquer it. I am considering using abracive blasing to remove the old lacquer and tatnish but I am afraid that it will pit the brass too badly and also that the abrasive will get into the threads of the key posts. Has anyone had experience with this or is there some other efficient way to strip the instrument (other than Nitric acid)?

Put away the sand blaster! Get some lacquer strip in a can. I haven't used anything but an immersion tank, but I've heard a number of others say that "Avation" (I think) strip sold at auto parts stores works well.
