Anyone have any
advice on removing the venturi tube from a trombone hand slide? I've
only done it a few times and the methods I know aren't working. Any
help would be much appreciated!

Any good methods of removing Trombone Venturi tubes?

This can be a multi-layered topic and much depends on the situation. First, are you replacing the tube or trying to remove the venturi to convert to removable venturis?
If replacing the tube, I clean the slide (smells better when you heat it) and remove the tube from the cork barrel. Several suppliers make tapered rods that will slide in from the stocking end and allow you to grip and twist and wiggle after heating to (hopefully) remove the venturi. Sometimes, corrosion holds the venturi stronger than solder and this method will not work. In that case, take a jeweler's saw and very carefully cut a spiral starting at the mouthpiece end of the inner slide. Once you separate the inner slide from the venturi, continue cutting the spiral until the venturi is free. You need to apply heat after you start the cut to release the solder at the end. It's fairly easy after you do it a time or two. Try it on a junker.
If you need to remove the venturi from a good slide tube, you are somewhat limited. You might install the spacing wedges to keep the slide centered in the barrel while heating, and be aware that it doesn't take that much heat to unsolder a soft soldered brace flange on the cork barrel. If that will not work, remove the inner tube and try fluxing and heating the end and possibly heating and quenching in water a few times to loosen the corrosion. Be careful not to heat red hot as that will crystalize the soft solder and make it permanent.
A little luck from the trombone fairy helps...

Bob Bair's advice is very good....especially his remark about solder going permanent. I remember a couple where I felt the solder had melted and the venturi did not come out. So I unsoldered the brace, filled a jar with some penetrating oil, placed the culprit in and let it soak overnight. The next morning I cleaned well and tried again and the tube came right out.I am (was) using the Ferree Venturi removal steels. Bear in mind it worked for me and no guarantees.
