Have you ever had a trombone in your shop that had tubes that you were
afraid would buckle due to red rot if you tried to straighten them?
...or tubes that were too severely bent for just drawing the dent out?
Try this:
Take
a slide mandrel and put it at the EXACT location of the bend. Chuck it
in a vise and use it to "rebound" the slide back straight. This is VERY
immediate and VERY direct. You only need medium-strength blows at the
hardest and check frequently.
One blow may be enough!
After
straightening using this method, there is sometimes (though not that
often) a bit of distortion where the end of the mandrel contacted the
opposite side of the slide. Tap this area down and use a slide expander
to lightly burnish this area back round.
Voila! With some practice,
you'll add this technique to your arsenal and repair slide tubes you
previously thought couldn't be repaired!

When trying to straighten slide tubes that you don't want to do the
regular way (pushing down with a rag or something while rubbing the
length of the tube), try this: After using the Ferree's N87A (one of
the best and easiest to use tools I have ever seen) over the last few
years, I've found that it has a tendency to slightly bend the tubes
(which I can usually straighten in one shot by the traditional method).
The nice thing is that it's always predictable - if I'm using the
pliers on the top side it bends slightly down....if I'm on the right
side, it bends left, etc. I now use this method to STRAIGHTEN tubes
with the support of a tight mandrel running the length of the tube,
with no possible chance of a collapse.

Message one worries me about possibly bending a hand slide mandrel.
When
I was first taught I was shown how to burnish on the mandrels but found
that non of the mandrels we straight and caused more problems for me
later.
I ended up buying a new set of mandrels that give me a true product everytime faster.
